Individual PTA Units

The following is a list of recommendations to ensure that your local unit PTA continues to be effective and successful:

  • Cooperation of principal, assistant principal, and faculty and a good executive board
  • Enthusiastic and hard working committee chairpersons
  • Active parents - this can be encouraged by keeping in touch with them through a newsletter
  • Good public relations between the school, home, and community
  • An informative PTA handbook
  • Good PTA programs for students
  • Profitable fundraising projects
  • A thoroughly planned and constructive budget
  • Involvement in cultural arts programs
  • A well organized volunteer program
  • A good membership campaign, especially during the yearly membership month (October)
  • Regularly occurring executive board meetings
  • Application of the National PTA Handbook
  • Implementation of a quality hospitality effort
  • Working with and for the Newport News Council of PTAs
  • Reading the local paper to keep abreast of issues of PTA and education importance on a national, state, and local level
  • Observe special days and celebrations (e.g. American Education Week, PTA Day at the General Assembly, Teacher Appreciation Week, Founder's Day)
  • Excellent record keeping, especially a history of financial records
  • Sharing of all subscriptions received by the local unit president
  • Sharing of Council Newsletters with the local unit board and membership

Audit Procedures Print E-mail

Auditing involves following financial transactions through records to be sure that receipts have been properly accounted for and expenditures made as authorized in the minutes and in conformity with PTA bylaws, standing rules, and budget limitations. It must be completed at the end of each PTA fiscal year and when a treasurer resigns their position. No one should EVER take the "books" from a past treasurer until an audit has been completed!

Unit in Good Standing Print E-mail

In order for your unit to participate in State, District, and Council sponsored programs (example: Arts in Education, Essay Contest, After Prom Grant, Volunteer of the Year), your unit must be a "UNIT IN GOOD STANDING" both with the Virginia State PTA and our Newport News Council of PTAs.
